From the September 2008 Newsletter:
By Noni Richen
Fellow property owners, the wolves are at our doors. Candidates are on the ballot who feel that they, not you, should control what you do with your most hard-earned asset—your property. We made decisions to invest in property rather than put our savings into a bank. For these decisions we are perceived as pariahs and criminals. They’ve put Prop M on the ballot to punish us for taking on a tough job and for occasionally exchanging harsh words with our renters. They want to control every improvement we make to our property—Prop J—but conveniently leave loopholes for so-called affordable housing developers. We are the original affordable housing providers, but are vilified for making rentals available. They want to add punitive taxes if you are party to the unpardonable sin of seeing your property increase in value–Prop N. Our Board of Directors authorized spending $1,200 of your money to put arguments against these measures into the voters’ handbook. It is our job to explain to our neighbors and coworkers how damaging these measures can be to our beautiful city. It is the job of all of us to take part in the campaigns of the moderate candidates we’ve endorsed. We’ll have phone banks and will be walking precincts with our candidates. Our candidates need your donations for their campaigns. Don’t wait for us to call you. Make our job a little easier by emailing info@smallprop.org and let us know what you can do to help in this most important of elections!
We are inviting our endorsed candidates and proponents of good government to speak to us at our September and October meetings. Remember, they are counting noses. To lend our organization credibility it is essential that everyone who is able attend these two meetings. PLEASE make every effort to do so. Thank you for all the support you give us.
