San Francisco Examiner "Letters from Readers" April 11, 2008
By Jerold Hayden

April 11, 2008

Where do writers like Joe Mac get off advocating that middle-class property owners should be compelled by the government to subsidize tenants by providing below-fair-market price rentals? He suggests that the owner sell his building, but he fails to acknowledge that the owner would be left with a fraction of the sale price — after San Francisco's transfer tax and all the other taxes on selling a house. And where is he to go to live? Those who can't afford the now-ridiculous rents in San Francisco should consider moving somewhere cheaper to live. Are we a socialist state, or do we own what we have worked hard to pay for?
