Allen Lew's statement that "rent control has not added a single unit of new housing" is like saying the Bill of Rights has never solved a murder mystery (letters, April 5­6). Rent control was not designed to build housing, but to protect long­ term renters, e.g. seniors on fixed incomes, from opportunistic land­lords who would be happy to throw them out for someone who would pay more.
