SPOSF Action Alert
We need your help!! Please write to Supervisor Dufty now
to tell him your opposition to Supervisor Chiu's garage legislation.
His email address is Bevan.Dufty@sfgov.org, or call him at (415) 554-5184.
The next vote is scheduled for Tuesday February 23.
Supervisor David Chiu has proposed to essentially prohibit garages
in his district; North Beach, Chinatown and Telegraph Hill.
If passed, a property owner would have to obtain a conditional use permit to install a
garage and the Board of Supervisors would now be the body to hear appeals.
The proposal would prohibit garages in buildings in which the Ellis Act
or any no-fault eviction has occurred in the prior ten years. If passed,
this proposal could be the first step towards imposing similar restrictions in other
parts of the City.
This is a power grab by the Board of Supervisors and an attempt to
incorporate the rent ordinance into the planning code and punish property
owners. Both of these are bad ideas.
Supervisor Dufty is the swing vote on this proposal. We need Supervisor Dufty
to vote no on this, so that the Mayor's veto can be sustained. He voted for it
with reservations on the first vote. We need you to write him or call to let him
know there is much opposition to this bad legislation.
