It appears from saber rattling in Southern California as well as locally that rent control activists are setting up a plan to try to repeal or put restrictions on the Ellis Act again. The Ellis Act, which guarantees an owner’s right to go out of the rental business, is the last resort for many owners who cannot evict problem tenants or who for a myriad of reasons want to stop renting their units. Since the Ellis Act is used predominantly by small building owners, this affects our members in a big way. We need to be in Sacramento to counter legislation that affects us. Can you be part of our Sacramento committee, which will monitor current and future legislation, occasionally visit legislators in Sacramento and keep on top of this issue on behalf of SPOSF? If so, please contact Kim Stryker via SPOSF’s e-mail at: info@smallprop.org. Kim will be organizing the Sacramento committee.
