Supervisor John Avalos is serving us a Halloween trick. He has introduced legislation that would EXTEND EVICTION CONTROLS TO RENTALS GIVEN CERTIFICATES OF OCCUPANCY AFTER JUNE 13, 1979. This means that owners of newer rentals could only evict using one of the "just causes" listed in the Rent Control Ordinance.
This is another piece of counter-productive legislation. There are no figures available that prove this type of eviction is a problem to renters. This legislation will certainly put a further damper on the building of new rentals, hurting renters.
The Avalos proposal is a blatant attempt to build the support base for the radical tenant bloc on the Board of Supervisors. It is very important that we join other owner groups at the hearing:
WHEN AND WHERE: Monday, November 2, 1:00 pm. City Hall, Room 263. Land Use & Economic Development Committee.
LEGISLATION: File # 090583, Item #1 on the agenda.
Please plan to attend the hearing.
Also, take a few minutes to email and call the three supervisors on the Committee, and the Mayor.
