Updating your building to mercury-free thermometers

In 2006 the California legislature banned the sale of mercury-added thermostats. If your property was built prior to 2006, you should check, as it might contain such a thermostat. Mercury toxins can cause extreme harm, and mercury-added thermostats need to be replaced. In October 2021, the legislature enacted the Mercury Thermostat Collection Act. The law took effect on January 1, 2022. At the time of its passage the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (CDTSC) estimated that there were approximately 10 million mercury thermostats in California homes and businesses. The Act describes how to properly dispose of such thermostats:
- Place the mercury thermostat in a tightly-sealed bag.
- Locate a nearby drop-off location (visit: thermostatcare.org/locations). There are at least 15 locations in the city.
- At the drop-off site you'll be given a rebate form to fill onsite. Or you can print out the form and fill it out before you drop off the thermostat (visit: https://thermostatcare.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/CA-Consumer-Rebate-Payment-Invoice-Form-2022.pdf).
- Finally, mail in the rebate form and the rebate of $30 will be mailed to you.
