Allen Lew's statement that "rent control has not added a single unit of new housing" is like saying the Bill of Rights has never solved a murder mystery (letters, April 56). Rent control was not designed to build housing, but to protect long term renters, e.g. seniors on fixed incomes, from opportunistic landlords who would be happy to throw them out for someone who would pay more.
