ACTION ALERT -- Say NO to AB 1506

January 2, 2017

Sadly the person we elected to represent us in Sacramento, David Chiu, has co-sponsored a new bill (AB 1506) to REPEAL the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. The measure has 3 sponsors, Assemblymembers Richard Bloom (Santa Monica), Rob Bonita (Oakland) and our very own David Chiu (San Francisco). David Chiu is Chairman of the Housing Committee.

In 1995, the California Legislature passed and the Governor signed AB 1164 - known as the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act. This law had two primary objectives:

  1. It cleared the way for owners in rent control communities to establish initial rental rates when there was a change in occupancy at a dwelling unit.
  2. It prevents extending rent control to new buildings.

This new bill must be defeated. We need to phone both offices of our two elected California State Assembly members, David Chiu and Phil Ting. As each office keeps a tally of the number of calls on any bill, we suggest you call both their Sacramento and San Francisco offices. Here are the numbers to call.

Assemblymember David Chiu: Sacramento (916) 319-2017, San Francisco (415) 557-3013.
Assemblymember Phil Ting: Sacramento (916) 319-2019, San Francisco (415) 557-2312.

We need at least 300 people to call each of these numbers. A long message is not required. You can say "Please vote no on AB 1506." If you want to expand your message you can point out that this measure will discourage investment in badly needed rental property. It is unfair to families counting on income from their rental property. You can add many other thoughts.

This measure will be debated over the next months and we will need to fight it all the way. The first discussion will be at the Assembly Housing Committee.

Sincerely,

Noni Richen, President
