The City imposes a Rent Board Fee on owners of residential property to fund the Rent Board's costs of administering services to implement the Rent Ordinance. This year's fee is $59.00, of which 50% can be charged to the renter. In prior tax years, the fee was collected via an additional charge that appeared on the owner's property tax bill; failure to pay the fee was enforced similarly to a failure to pay the property taxes.

Effective in tax year 2021-2022, Administrative Code Section 37A was amended to remove the Rent Board Fee from the property tax bill. Instead, the Rent Board will now issue invoices to all owners required to pay the fee. No changes have been made to the methodology used to calculate the fee, or the type of units subject to, or exempt from its payment. The amendments to Administrative Code are intended to align Rent Board fee collection with other fees that are collected via invoices rather than the property tax bill.

If you believe that one or more of your units is being billed incorrectly as a rental, and thus not subject to the fee, check with the Rent Board for information on applying for an exemption.
