The Land Use and Economic Development Committee will meet Monday, March 24, at 1:30 p.m. in Room 263 at City Hall to discuss the Ordinance to amend the Administrative Code to mitigate adverse impacts of tenant evictions.
 
Please plan on attending this meeting and voicing your objections to the proposed legislation.
 
The new proposal would entitle each relocated tenant the greater of existing rent allocation payments ($5,265.10 per person; maximum $15,795.27 plus $3,510.06 for elderly or handicapped) or the difference between the tenant's current rent and the prevailing rent for a comparable apartment in San Francisco over a two year period. Here is an example of such a calculation. Mission District, 2 bedroom unit, 27 year tenant now paying $909 per month. Index 3.055 for reaching back 27 years. New rent would be $2,777 (3.055 x $909). Difference $1,868 ($2,777 - $909) would be multiplied by 24 (2 years) and the payment would be $44,832, to be divided among tenants and documented sub tenants but not roommates.
 
The figure of $44,842 would be bigger than the existing rent allocation payment so this higher payment would prevail.
 
Note: The index is a calculation of average rents over the years. Reaching back 27 years the factor is 3.055. The factor for 19 years is 2.344. The factor varies by year and of course the rent level varies as well. This program would be administered by the Rent Board with its standard appeals processes.
 
We don't need increased relocation payments and we don't need the Rent Board administering yet another program. Come to the Land Use meeting and let your voices be heard.
