SPOSF Action Alert: Support Mayor Newsom's Condo Lottery bypass proposal in two ways.

October 17, 2010

Facing a half-billion dollar budget deficit, Mayor Newsom has proposed a one-time buyout plan for the nearly 2000 units that are already in the condo lottery. The plan could raise $8,000,000 dollars for the general fund by allowing owners to pay $20,000 or less, depending upon years in the lottery in addition to normal conversion fees. The radical tenant groups oppose the plan, saying that renters will be evicted and the supply of rental housing will be reduced. NOT TRUE!  Most of the units in the lottery are already occupied by owners as tenancies in common (TICs). The Mayor's plan would allow these homeowners the option to convert to condominium status sooner.

Two Ways SPOSF Members Can Help

  • Write the Supervisors! Click on /sposf/email-representatives/ and write to all the Supervisors, especially your own, supporting the measure. Write a brief letter in your own words. Point out that we need the $8,000,000 revenue to run our city, and ask what services will be cut if we don't get the money. The Supervisors have not presented alternative plans, except increasing fees and taxes.

  • Attend the Hearing! The public testimony on all agenda items begins at 4:00 pm, Monday, June 21, Room 250, City Hall. The tenant radicals are busing in their usual crowd of tenants, over 200 of them. We must show up in force.

We will see you at City Hall on Monday!

Sincerely,

SPOSF BOARD OF DIRECTORS
